چکیده

sialolithiasis, neoplasms and developmental disorders may be encountered in the pediatric parotid gland. These lesions may present with swelling of the parotid region, which makes diagnosis problematic. The use of imaging plays an important role in defining the location and extent of lesions and for evaluating involvement of the facial nerve, including the mastoid portion. Finally, imaging can provide a specific diagnosis in a proper clinical setting. The imaging modalities used to evaluate parotid lesions have changed over the past several decades. Plain films and sialograms were used initially, but basic approaches today involve ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (1). In this review, we describe the imaging spectrum of a variety of congenital and acquired lesions in the pediatric parotid gland, with a comparison of the findings with the use of various imaging modalities.

Parotid Gland Carcinoma Masquerading as an Aural Polyp

Introduction Parotid gland squamous cell carcinoma is an uncommon aggressive neoplasm with poor prognosis. Aural polyps are usually the presenting features of chronic suppurative otitis media, tuberculous otitis media, and adenoma or carcinoma. The malignant aural polyp is very rare. Parotid gland carcinoma masquerading as an aural polyp has rarely been described in the literature. ...

Pleomorphic adenoma arising from the tail of the parotid gland – value of preoperative multi planar imaging: a case report

BACKGROUND Lesions of the 'tail' of the parotid gland are difficult to assess clinically and provide a diagnostic dilemma on imaging, especially in the axial plane. Pedunculated lesions of the 'tail' of parotid can be mistaken for an extra parotid lesion. Accurate localisation of these lesions on imaging is essential to assist the clinical diagnosis, to prevent inadequate/incomplete excision an...

Parotid Lesions in Children Undergoing Parotidectomy. The Children’s Memorial Hospital Experience

Pediatric salivary gland disease represents a very small portion of the pathology that we see among children and as such, it represents a very small part of what head and neck surgeons treat. The majority of salivary gland masses occur within the parotid gland [1-4]. Parotid gland lesions are infrequent in children. Less than 5% of all salivary gland neoplasms occur in this population and less ...

Susceptibility weighted imaging improved diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance in characterization of parotid gland lesions

Objective: The purpose of this study was to clarify the diagnostic value of susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) for distinguishing malignant from benign parotid gland lesions by Magnetic Resonance. Methods: This research prospectively collected the preoperative SWI findings of 41 patients including 12 malignant and 29 benign parotid gland lesions which were confirmed by surgical pathology lat...

Use of imaging techniques in detection of parotid masses Location compared to surgery

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the use of cross-sectional imaging techniques verses surgery in locating parotid masses. Material and Methods: Our study was performed on patients assumed to have parotid masses from Dec 2010 to Dec 2011. Before surgery, imaging studies (Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging) of parotid were done. After surgery, we compared the s...
